A Luxury Catamaran Journey Through Greece’s Saronic Islands

There are trips you enjoy, and then there are trips that completely reset the way you experience travel.

Our seven-day sailing journey through Greece’s Saronic Islands aboard a luxury catamaran with Captain George felt less like a holiday and more like stepping into a slower, more beautiful version of life.

Over the course of a week, we sailed through the Saronic Gulf exploring Hydra, Spetses, Nafplio, Poros, and Aegina  combining luxury sailing, curated cultural experiences, authentic gastronomy, and quiet moments at sea that somehow become the memories you hold onto most.

Unlike the faster pace of traditional island hopping in Greece, this itinerary was intentionally designed around balance:
slow mornings,
short scenic sailing routes,
private local experiences,
hidden swim spots,
and elegant harbor towns filled with history and character.

And honestly, sailing the Saronic Islands by catamaran may be the most underrated luxury travel experience in Greece.

Why the Saronic Islands Are Perfect for a Luxury Sailing Holiday

The Saronic Gulf offers something completely different from the Cyclades.

The islands are greener, calmer, and far less crowded than destinations like Santorini or Mykonos, while still offering incredible beauty, history, and authentic Greek culture.

One of the biggest advantages is the sailing itself. The distances between islands are shorter, meaning more time enjoying each destination and less time in transit. The waters are calmer, the anchorages are stunning, and the entire journey feels naturally relaxed.

Traveling aboard a private catamaran made the experience even more seamless. Every detail, from secluded swim stops to smooth harbor arrivals and onboard hospitality felt carefully curated without ever feeling overly structured.

Day 1: Welcome Onboard & Our First Sail Through the Saronic Gulf

Our journey began in Nea Peramos, just outside Athens, where we boarded the catamaran and met Captain George and the crew.

Within minutes, the atmosphere completely shifted.

Shoes came off.
Phones disappeared.
The pace of life immediately slowed down.

After a short introduction and welcome briefing, we sailed gently along the coastline before anchoring in a sheltered bay for our first swim in the Saronic Gulf.

The water was impossibly clear the kind of bright turquoise that barely looks real and it set the tone for the entire week ahead.

Lunch was served onboard while the catamaran drifted quietly at anchor, and by sunset it already felt like we had been at sea for days in the best possible way.

Day 2: Hydra & the Coastal Riding Experience

Arriving in Hydra felt like stepping into another era.

With no cars on the island, the harbor moves at its own rhythm  donkeys carrying supplies through stone alleyways, elegant mansions rising above the port, and sailboats gently lining the waterfront.

But one of the most memorable parts of the entire itinerary was Hydra’s curated coastal riding experience.

Rather than simply wandering the island, we spent the morning exploring Hydra’s quieter coastal landscapes on horseback, following scenic seaside paths with panoramic views over the Aegean. It offered an entirely different perspective of the island beyond the harbor itself.

Back in town, we spent the afternoon exploring Hydra’s narrow streets, boutique shops, waterfront cafés, and hidden staircases before returning onboard for sunset drinks with the island glowing gold in the background.

It was one of those days that somehow felt both peaceful and cinematic at the same time.

Day 3: Spetses & Greece’s Maritime Heritage

The atmosphere shifted again as we sailed toward Spetses.

Elegant yet deeply connected to its naval history, Spetses blends cosmopolitan energy with traditional island charm. Horse-drawn carriages moved along the waterfront while wooden fishing boats floated beside luxury yachts in the harbor.

One of the highlights here was visiting the historic museum dedicated to Laskarina Bouboulina one of the most important female figures of the Greek War of Independence. Learning about the island’s maritime legacy added an entirely different layer to the journey beyond the scenery itself.

The rest of the afternoon was left intentionally unstructured.

Some of us explored the Old Harbor, others relaxed onboard, and some wandered through hidden backstreets lined with bougainvillea-covered homes and elegant cafés.

That balance between curated experiences and complete freedom became one of the things I loved most about this itinerary.

Day 4: Nafplio & a Private Guided Cultural Exploration

Nafplio felt entirely different from the islands romantic, historical, and incredibly atmospheric.

Arriving by catamaran offered a spectacular perspective of the town, with Venetian architecture, fortress walls, and neoclassical buildings unfolding along the coastline.

Instead of simply sightseeing independently, the itinerary included a private guided cultural exploration of Nafplio, which completely transformed the experience.

Walking through the old town with a local guide brought the history of Greece’s first modern capital to life in a way we never would have experienced on our own. We visited historic squares, admired the Venetian architecture, and climbed up to the iconic Palamidi Fortress for panoramic views across Nafplio and the Argolic Gulf.

The combination of sailing and immersive cultural experiences made this journey feel far more elevated than a typical island-hopping trip.

Day 5: Poros & the Culinary Experience

Poros may have been the biggest surprise of the trip.

The island has this understated elegance  pastel houses climbing the hillside, sailboats lining the marina, and waterfront tavernas that seem designed for lingering late into the evening.

But the real highlight here was the gastronomy and wine tasting experience.

Rather than simply dining out, the experience focused on introducing us to local flavors and regional wines in a more intentional way. Long lunches stretched into the afternoon while local wine, fresh seafood, olive oil, and traditional Greek dishes turned into one of the most memorable culinary experiences of the week.

Back onboard, Captain George navigated us toward quiet swimming coves where we spent the rest of the afternoon floating in calm blue water before another spectacular sunset sail.

Day 6: Aegina, Swim Stops & Slow Island Living

By the time we reached Aegina, life onboard had fully become our normal rhythm.

Morning coffee on deck.
Swimming before breakfast.
Afternoons stretched out under the sun.
Evenings spent dining slowly beside the sea.

Aegina offered a more local and authentic atmosphere compared to some of Greece’s more polished islands. The waterfront was filled with fishing boats, pistachio shops, and traditional tavernas where locals still seemed to know each other by name.

Captain George anchored the catamaran in several secluded bays around the island, giving us access to swimming spots impossible to reach by land.

Honestly, those quiet moments at anchor became some of my favorite memories of the entire journey.

What It’s Really Like Sailing Greece by Catamaran

Before this trip, I assumed the destinations themselves would become the highlight.

But what stayed with me most were the moments in between.

Early mornings at sea.
Watching Hydra appear on the horizon at dawn.
Swimming in hidden coves.
Long lunches onboard.
Sunset sailing with nowhere else to be.

Traveling by catamaran changes your relationship with time in the best possible way.

And having Captain George and the crew guiding the journey made the entire experience feel effortless, personal, and deeply relaxing from beginning to end.
